The defections of loyalists of Governor Rochas Okorocha
to the opposition PDP has heightened and increased suspicion among members of
the rescue mission administration in the State.
The APC in the State has witnessed massive decampment of
its key members in recent times.
First to blaze the trail was the Mayor of Owerri Zone,
Chief Gibson Achonwa Njemaze (Oyiga) who rejoined the PDP. He formalized his
return to the party with a grand reception organized in his honour by the State
chapter of the PDP
.
.
Next was Okorocha’s
kinsman and senatorial hopeful in Orlu Zone, Chief Felix Idiga, member representing
Owerri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ezenwa Onyewuchi
and lately the State Chairman of the APC in the State, Prince Marshal
Okoroaforanyanwu.
Before then, former Governor Achike Udenwa and Chief
Mike Ahamba (SAN) had left the APC boat in the State and pitched their tenth
with the PDP.
Based on this situation, sources said the there is high
level suspicion existing in government circles as no one knows who will be the
next decampee.
Government
secrets are said to be seriously guarded as there is an air of uncertainty
pervading amongst stalwarts of the ruling party in the State.
Since the defections became a regular occurrence, top government
functionaries are said to be keeping sealed lips on matters affecting the party
for fear of blackmail.
The just concluded ward and local Government congresses
of the party is said to have ignited the gale of defections in the
party and ruffled feathers in the party as
key loyalists of the Governor are said to be dissatisfied with the exercise
which did not favour them.
A local tabloid reported on Wednesday that top
government officials such as the Secretary to the State Government, Anthony
Anwuka was said to have expressed displeasure with the conduct of the
congresses which did not favour him on his Oguta LGA.
In a related development, imposition of candidates and
allegations of non funding of the party in the State were cumulative factors
which prompted Marshal Okoroaforanyanwu and Lady Chidinma Akasike to quit the APC in Imo
State.
Both are Chairman and Woman leader of the party respectively
until last Saturday when they resigned.
Anyanwu told journalists in Owerri that he funded from
his purse the affairs of the party and shouldered other responsibilities
without getting a dime from the Governor.
He said there was imposition of persons at the party’s
just concluded ward and local Government congresses wondering why the Governor
who always spoke against imposition will resort to same act.
