PDP Lawmakers Absent At Imo Assembly Resumption

The Imo State House of Assembly resumed today, 29th January, 2013, with all PDP members absent.  Also absent at the House sitting was member representing Oru East State constituency, Hon Greg Okemili.

Okemili is a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Efforts to speak to his media aide, Mr. Emmanuel Ikpeama to ascertain the whereabouts of his boss was futile.

The absence of the PDP lawmakers further justifies fears of an ongoing cold war in the House between APGA members and their PDP counterparts. The PDP is in the minority but has the opportunity of sliding into the majority if another APGA member decamps to its fold.

In recent times, there have been speculations of a rift in the House following reports in some quarters that there are secret plans to impeach the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.

Okorocha is of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The plan was said to have been hatched by the PDP, a report which has been refuted by the media section of the Imo State House of Assembly.

Reasons for the absence of PDP members at today’s resumption were not ascertained, but a source said it might be unconnected with the invitation of PDP stakeholders in Imo State by the presidency.

The outcome of the Abuja meeting held early Tuesday morning is unknown as at press time.

Speaking during plenary, Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumuogu, cautioned journalists to cross check their facts before publication.

The Speaker ostensibly worried by the avalanche of negative media reports about the activities of the House warned that the House will no longer tolerate such offensive reports.

The House also passed into law the controversial Community Government Council (CGC), which makes it a fourth tier of government in the State.

It will be recalled that tension had been brewing in the House ahead of today’s resumption after the Christmas break.  Aside several political undercurrents, the Assembly complex was invaded by men of the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) who arrested the Clerk of the House, Barr. Chris Duru.  He was later released
