Lecturers of Imo State University have proceeded on an
indefinite strike, this online newspaper was informed
The strike is coming barely few days it held its convocation
ceremony. Over 50,000 students took part in the event.
The strike confirms INNONEWS.COM story last week the lecturers
planned the strike but shelved it after the institution's convocation.
Rising from its
congress before the convocation ceremony, the lecturers under Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) threatened to embark on the strike but decided the shelve it after the convocation of graduating students.
Again, non- payment of salaries is the bone of contention as
they lamented over 30% salary deduction from their January salary.
Workers in Imo State were paid 70% of their salaries for the
month of January which attracted widespread outrage and resentment from the
workers.
Though they collected the cheques, they threatened to embark
on an indefinite strike to express their displeasure over the salary cut.
While labour explained that the 30% will be paid at a later
date when the revenue of the State increase, this has not gone down well with
the workers in the State.
There are also feelers that lecturers at Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo
may follow suit in the strike as reports indicate that they are
insisting that school fees of students should be used to make up the 30%
shortfall in their salaries.
